It takes a team to build a robot.
SERT members work in subteams, each with a student lead, and collaborate on the many parts that are integral to making a robot, as well as operating and funding a student-led, volunteer-supported group. With our co-captains, this leadership coordinates events and activities, as well as mentoring junior team members to help them develop their skills and become next year’s leaders.
2023-24 Team Leadership

Callaway Macovis
CO-CAPTAIN
I’ve been a member of SERT since my sophomore year. My time on the team has been spent mostly on mechanical and electrical work. I’m now a senior at South Eugene High School and team co-captain. I plan to go to college for aerospace engineering or video game design. Eventually I’d like to have a cat. In my free time I play trumpet, make 3D printed helmets and armor, and play video games. Long story short, I’m a nerd.

Cinco Murchison
CO-CAPTAIN
I joined SERT as a sophomore and both worked with the mechanical subteam and developed an interest in strategy. The next season I stepped into the role of strategy subteam lead with almost no knowledge. I spent the summer learning as much as I could about strategy for robotics. After splitting my time between strategy and CAD last year, I’m now co-captain for my senior year at South Eugene High School. In college I plan to major in mechanical engineering. I enjoy going for walks in the park with my dog, playing video games, and playing sports with my friends.

BUSINESS LEAD
I joined SERT my junior year and took on a leadership role within the business side of the team. I became a lead within a few months of joining SERT, something that does not typically occur. After highschool, I plan to study archaeology with a minor in a STEM field. I play violin and recently picked up the guitar. I like drawing as well, both digitally and traditionally. I’m a black belt in taekwondo and enjoy playing video games with friends, and baking.

CAD LEAD
I joined SERT when I was a sophomore at South Eugene High School. I was part of the mechanical subteam for my first year. I then worked up to becoming the CAD subteam lead. In addition to CAD, I spend time machining parts on our CNC router, driving at competitions, and working on strategy. I’m now a senior, and my college plan is to get an undergraduate degree in engineering, likely mechanical engineering. I like to play video games, spend time with friends, and go on walks with my dog in the park.

ELECTRICAL LEAD
I am currently a senior at Pleasant Hill High School. I joined SERT my junior year and spent the season working with both the mechanical and electrical subteams. This summer I was very involved in the Go Baby Go summer camp – a program where our team teaches middle school students how to modify ride-on cars for use by children with mobility disorders. After graduation I plan to study aerospace or nuclear engineering. Outside of SERT I enjoy running, FFA, and building and researching microbial fuel cells.

MECHANICAL LEAD
Ever since joining the team as a freshman I've been working on the mechanical subteam. This is now my junior year and I’m proud of all the effort that has led to my becoming the mechanical subteam lead this season. After high school I plan to study engineering of some sort. Outside of SERT I enjoy reading, drawing, and hanging out with friends.

MEDIA LEAD
I was a sophomore when I joined SERT. At that time the media subteam didn’t exist, so I spent my time as a member of both the mechanical and electrical subteams. More recently, I’m particularly proud of the work I’ve done as an essential member of the media team. I’m now a senior and media subteam lead. After high school I plan to study computer hardware engineering. My hobbies include playing video games, video editing, photo editing, and playing tennis.

SAFETY CO-LEAD
My first year with the team was when I was a sophomore at South Eugene High School. Initially I worked with the electrical subteam and then in later seasons focused on mechanical and safety work. Going into my senior year, I hope to participate in a wide variety of technical and safety aspects of SERT. I'd like to go to college and explore fields like biology and computer science. My hobbies include Taiko drumming, reading, origami, and baking.
-
Emma Bergman
SAFETY CO-LEAD
Since joining the team during my sophomore year, I've done mostly safety and business work. I’ve also spent some time helping with the mechanical subteam. I take safety very seriously and am proud to say there have been no mortal wounds while I’ve been Safety Captain (or in the history of the team). In college I would like to study psychology and hopefully become a psychiatrist. In my free time I like to draw and engage in other creative activities.

SOFTWARE CO-LEAD
I joined SERT last year as a freshman and spent the season learning to program the robot. It’s a task that never ends and involves coding, solving problems, figuring out where things went wrong, interpreting what the robot is doing, and so on. I’m grateful that I got to go to the World Championship last year and learn from this really cool team. I’m now a sophomore at South Eugene High School and enjoy biking and playing piano, board games, and video games.

STRATEGY LEAD
I joined the team as a CAD member during my sophomore year and developed an interest for strategy and FIRST Robotics Competition knowledge after my first season. A highlight of my SERT experience has been cooperating with other teams at competitions to craft successful match strategies and plans. I plan to major in computer science and pursue a job right out of undergraduate college. Besides robotics, I enjoy playing video games, spending time with friends, and working out.
